The Youth Economy Centre (YEC) is a visionary architectural concept designed by the talented graduates contributing to the South African Youth Economy’s initiative to fight against the increasing unemployment rate.It is a concept of innovative solutions and fresh perspectives shaping the physical spaces that will empower South Africa’s young entrepreneurs and workforce.
The campus is inspired by the South African flag.It is a reflection of national pride, embodying the flag’s deeper meaning of coming together as one. The flag’s iconic ‘Y’ shape inspired the layout, creating hubs that bring together diverse groups and industries in a spirit of collaboration and convergence. By prioritising flexibility and openness, the design creates dynamic spaces where young people can come together, exchange ideas, and unlock new possibilities – whether for learning, growth, or creative expression.
The campus will offer resources and services to students, graduates and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, innovate and develop new industries.

The campus consists of three buildings, each allocated with their respective fields. It is meant to be welcoming and open to students, lecturers, and individuals who require spaces to develop their respective professions and transition from students to working individuals. Both the exterior and interior designs prioritise sustainability and biophilic principles, seamlessly integrating natural elements and eco-friendly practices.
The minimalism and industrial aesthetic gave further inspiration to the use of timber, concrete, stone, glass and metal as the main materials to provide tranquillity, warmth and provoke thought. The campus makes use of energy-efficient systems, solar-powered systems, smart technologies, recyclable/green materials, retention ponds within the buildings and courtyards that promote independent management of the building, and the incorporation of plant life and skylights.
